Studios are known for saying films need to make back two and a half times their production budgets just to break even (not even turning a profit). And there are advertising, marketing and distribution costs to usually factor in as well. This is why some movies appear profitable on paper. Sure, they made a little more than their budgets, but there was likely more money spent. These are the biggest flops of 2017 — the movies expected to do big things that just didn't.
